Side sleepers: where is your arm supposed to go?
Most side sleepers do the same thing every night. Roll over, punch the pillow into shape, then shove an arm underneath it or tuck a hand under their cheek. A few hours later the arm is tingling, the shoulder is stiff, and the pillow is flat again.
It's easy to blame age or a bad mattress. Often it's simpler than that: the pillow was never shaped for the way you sleep.
Three reasons side sleeping goes wrong
- The gap. Lying on your side leaves a big space between your ear and the mattress. A flat pillow doesn't fill it, so your head tips down all night.
- The arm. A regular rectangle gives your arm nowhere to go. So it ends up under the pillow or under you, with your shoulder taking the weight.
- The flattening. Fold your pillow in half. If it stays folded, it has lost the height it started with, and you're probably stacking two to make up for it.
The towel trick side sleepers use
Physical therapists and sleep coaches have suggested it for years: roll up a bath towel and slide it into the bottom edge of your pillowcase. The roll sits under your neck and fills the gap between your head and shoulder, so your head stops tipping down.
It's free and worth trying tonight. The catch is that towels unroll, flatten and slide around, and you're back to square one by 3am. It also does nothing for the arm.
What a butterfly shape changes
Think of it as the towel trick, built in. Butterfly-shaped pillows are designed around all three problems. A dip in the middle cradles your head, raised edges keep your neck level, and the side "wings" leave a space for your hands and arms, so you're not lying on them. Good ones use high-density memory foam that holds its shape night after night.

Fair warning: the first night on a contoured pillow feels different. Give it a week before you decide.
